How it is worked out
Gains on virtual digital assets are taxed at a flat 30% (introduced in 2022 as Section 115BBH), plus 4% health and education cess: 31.2% in all. Only the cost of buying can be deducted, and a loss cannot be set off against any other income. Separately, 1% TDS is deducted on the sale value (Section 194S of the old Act, now Section 393 of the Income-tax Act, 2025); you can claim it against your final tax. Surcharge for high incomes is not included.
